Best Photo Editing Apps for Instagram Users

Instagram effects and filters are great, but sometimes, you might need a more advanced editor. Photo editing software helps us take our photography skills to the next level, and graphic design tools help us create gorgeous promotional materials. If you’re not the best photo editor out there, you’ve come to the right place. Our guide will tell you the best photo editing apps for Instagram available today, and what you should consider when choosing one to use.

Best Apps and Programs

Without further ado, let’s get to the goods you came here for. Here are some of our favorite photo editing apps and programs, in no particular order.

Phonto

Phonto is great for people who need to add text to their photos. It features one of the largest font selections of any photo editing app and includes more than 200 free fonts for you to use. You can even add your own fonts, which is great for businesses that use custom fonts. All elements of the text are also fully customizable, including the size, color, shadow, angle, stroke color, background color, letter spacing, and line spacing. What’s more, the app is free to use, although there is a paid version that removes advertisements and adds more borders and backgrounds. Want to try it out for yourself? Grab it from the App Store or from Google Play.

Instasize

If you’ve been on Instagram for awhile, chances are good you’ve seen photos edited in Instasize. This popular app lets you add colorful, funky borders to your photos. You can add filters, overlays, and effects to your photos, adjust the brightness and color, make collages, add text, and even edit video. The best part? The app is totally free to use. Because it keeps things simple, it’s also the best app for mobile editing. Obviously, we think it’s pretty awesome. Wanna give it a go? Download it from the App Store, or find it on Google Play.

Adobe Photoshop CC

We couldn’t talk about photo editing apps without mentioning Adobe Photoshop, which is perhaps the king of all photo editing software. We wouldn’t be able to cover all its features even if we wrote a separate article, so you can read more about them here, and compare them to other versions of Photoshop. The full-fledged program, which includes all the bells and whistles, is pricey. However, it offers the most features for advanced photo editing. If you don’t want to shell out the big bucks for Photoshop CC, check out the Express version on the App Store and Google Play. This gives you the most basic photo editing features of Photoshop without breaking the bank.

Canva

Canva is a little different from the other photo editing apps we’ve listed here. It’s not so much a photo editor as it is a graphic design tool. Don’t let that intimidate you, though – its drag-and-drop interface makes it super easy to use. You can also create a template with custom dimensions and upload your own photos, which you can then edit and apply filters to. Canva is the best editor to use if you want to make gorgeous, professional Instagram posts, especially those with lots of text. Choose from thousands of free templates, in addition to icons, free stock photos, doodles, backgrounds, text elements, and so much more. It’s not available on the App Store or Google Play yet, so you’ll have to use the web version.

Desygner

If you’re looking for a graphic design tool that’s similar to Canva and available on the App Store and Google Play, check out Desygner. The app includes a built-in template for Instagram posts, which means you can create attractive Instagram posts with just one click. Curious about how it works? Download it for free from the App Store or Google Play.

Tips on Finding the Best App for You

Consider your own technical expertise. Some of the photo editors we’ve listed here are more advanced – particularly Photoshop and the graphic design tools – and will require some technical know-how. When pondering which app or program to download, think about your own expertise. You may want to start with something basic and easy to use at first, and then download a more advanced app or program in the future, once you’ve learned more about photo editing. If you want to use more advanced tools, teach yourself how to use them. No one was born knowing how to use Photoshop. Though some of its features are fairly straightforward, others will take a little getting used to. You don’t have to know every single feature in Photoshop to make beautiful photos, either. A basic knowledge is all you need, and you can get that just by exploring the program and trying out its features. Practice makes perfect. The more you practice editing your photos, the better you’ll get at it. If you’re not satisfied at first, or if you find an app too hard to use, don’t give up. Just be patient, and keep tinkering. You’ll get the hang of it eventually. And once you do, you’ll be glad that you stuck it out. Look up tutorials and tips for creating beautiful photos. When in doubt, consult YouTube. There are countless free guides out there on photo editing. Just do a quick Google search and you’ll find them. Many of the apps we’ve included here also have their own tutorials, so be sure to make use of them. Learn a thing or two about photography. Arm yourself with a basic knowledge of photography if you want to enhance your photo editing skills. Not only will this help you take better photos, but it’ll also teach you about how light, saturation, brightness, and hue work to enhance photos. Our handy guide on photography is a great place to start. Now that you know the best photo editing apps out there, why not give them a try? We’re sure you’ll be glad you did. Good luck, and happy editing!
