Instagram Trends to Look Out for in 2017


Instagram is obviously a large social media application already, and most of us are aware of that fact. What a lot of us don’t know is that there is always an up and coming trend to look out for, one that is going to be popular all over the world in a matter of months. The only thing to consider is that nobody knows what it is, and nobody will until it’s finally gone viral - that’s why I’m going to take a shot at some predictions of my own! Now I don’t claim to be a psychic by any means, but I am an expert when it comes to Instagram trends. I would say at least two or three of the trends I list here today will pop up in 2017, and maybe even all of them! I’d feel like a medal is deserving at that point, to be blatantly honest. Let’s get into it, shall we?

Shopping on Instagram

A lot of people shop on Instagram, but it’s not your traditional sense of “shopping”. People post clothes that they’re looking to get rid of with a price, or asking for offers, and people who are interested comment/direct message that person to make the purchase. It’s a fad that was growing over 2016, but it seems as if 2017 is going to be filled with Instagram sales. Most of the time it’s for clothing and stuff of that nature, but who’s to stop you from selling a piano on Instagram? I don’t even want to think about the shipping and taxes on that! Instagram recently updated their application to include product tags related to 20 different fashion brands. I suppose it’s another way to market/make money on Instagram’s side, but it also allows for shoppers on Instagram to experience a hassle-free shopping process. You don’t need to search for a link in any bios, just click on the product tag and see detailed information about the piece.

Meme Pages

This is a given, I’m sure, but meme pages are becoming increasing popular as of recent. I don’t know if it’s a surge of microwaved dinners messing with people’s brains or what, but they can’t seem to get enough of memes! If you’ve ever been scrolling down your explore page and saw a meme that made you scratch your head with a dumbfounded look on your face, you’ll know where I’m coming from. Meme pages were okay at first, but since there are simply way too many now, this is a fad that I personally hope doesn’t live long through 2017. What ever happened to that Jackie Chan face meme? I miss the simple times.

Instagram Video

Once again, if you’re out of the loop, Instagram now supports video. You can post short little clips to your page, as opposed to the past when you could only work with pictures - it has really expanded the reach that Instagram accounts have these days, particularly in the marketing sense. This year, it’s only going to get better; marketers are going to go above and beyond the norm to create high-quality Instagram videos that test the limits of our smartphones! Okay, maybe not that crazy, but you can expect an abundance of Instagram videos.

Mobile-First

A lot of Instagram posts and other marketers are going to rely on mobile marketing, because Instagram is a mainly mobile application. Sure, you can use it on your desktop computer - but when do you ever really do that? If you’re thinking to yourself “well, I use my computer for Instagram all of the time”, you’re in the 1%. It’s not a good 1% (nor a bad one!). The mobile-first approach is quite obvious because everyone has a smartphone these days, which means everybody can be marketed towards. We all want to buy products, it’s just a matter of figuring out what products specific groups of people want to buy. With the release of Instagram’s new analytic tools (Instagram Business Tools), companies are going to find it a lot easier to appeal to the average consumer. Not only when it comes to commercials on your television, but on your smartphone as well (through Instagram and YouTube, among other things).

Instagram Stories

Snapchat, eat your heart out! Instagram has recently released the stories option, which allows you to post little clips to your page (and allow your followers to look at it). They can see what you’ve been getting into throughout the day, and it’s quite important for celebrities and IG stars alike. It gives them a glimpse into your personal life, and offers up another opportunity to place some ads or marketing in general. It’s all about the money in 2017, and these trends are making that obvious! What do you think is going to be the next big Instagram fad?
